Joann Self sees stories everywhere.

“What’s your story?” is the question that has fascinated Joann Self, founder and executive director of True Story Pictures, since her earliest video project, a documentary about progressive black radio station WLOK, where longtime employees told their tales, some for the first time.More than just an oral history product, TSP is on a mission to give people a way to make their voices heard, and sometimes not by talking. “The Arts Interviews,” now out on DVD, spotlighted 13 regional artists in both words and works. Joann’s latest project, a collaboration with advocates for the mentally ill in the criminal justice system, called “Voices of Jericho,” tells three agonizing stories of hope; go to TrueStoryPictures.org to find out more. “We weren’t helping them tell their stories,” she says, “we were allowing their stories to be heard. I want to provide an opportunity for people to tell their own stories.”
