They called it “magic time,” the late-night email dialogue between Pat and her daughter, Amber, when they were working on Support to Go, The Unbook for the Journey through Breast Cancer, published in 2006. It wasn’t the first magic time, though, for these supernaturally connected women.
“In high school, I dressed crazy, and didn’t care what people thought of me,” said Amber; Pat rode to the rescue when school officials protested Amber’s clothes, wearing exactly the same thing. Then there were their adventures in Pat’s red Firebird with the T-tops; both can remember blasting “that Billy Idol tape.”
Now their “circle of silliness” includes both husbands and Amber’s 3-year-old daughter Lainey. “I thank God for it every day,” says Amber about her symbiotic relationship with her mom, a two-time cancer survivor, “as it becomes more obvious to me that it’s not something everyone has.”
