BREAK THIS RECORD
Deering & Down

Review by Johnnie Walker, Memphis and Shelby County Music Commission

The line between pop, country and R&B was never drawn when Deering & Down was creating tunes for their latest CD, Break This Record. The husband and wife duo have assembled a collection of bouncing, rhythmic and often melodic tunes to satisfy the musical cravings their fans have been thirsting for. The strong belt-it-out yet haunting vocals of Lahna Deering, sometimes reminiscent of Stevie Nicks, coupled with the “left of center” guitar playing of Rev. Neil Down provides a perfect storm.

Packed with Memphis influenced songs, the new album takes off with the upbeat first track, “Finally Found the One.” “Richard of Los Angeles” is a high point in the record; Rev. Down’s guitar gets a real workout on that track. The effortless blend of sultry voice and music driving the song “Wonder Who’s Calling” is exactly why this duo is in such high demand! The group’s versatility keeps the listeners interest all the way to end; the album is punctuated with “Sugar,” a classic blend of blues and country! Track to track, Break This Record from Deering & Down offers excellent studio production that somehow still makes you feel like you’re at a party enjoying a live show.
